This selection of photographs from Ballarat East dates from a 1992 National Trust of Victoria funded heritage project - the first of its kind undertaken in Australia. The National Trust’s intent was to probe whether the significance criteria for heritage aligned with community understandings of heritage value. The original photographs were taken on a 5x4 inch view camera and printed on silver bromide paper. A large-scale single edition book was produced with these photographs presented alongside poems by Linda Blake. The photographs highlight substantial changes in one of Australia's most significant colonial era urban areas.

Ballarat-based artist Paul Lambeth completed undergraduate studies in Art/Photography at Prahran CAE and MA (Research) at the University of Ballarat (now Federation University). He has broad experience in photography practice, including studio, architectural and medical photography. Throughout his career as a photographer, educationalist, and festival director, he has maintained a creative visual arts practice through selective exhibitions and publications.
